Welcome to Design and Photography I! The beginning of the 2020-2021 School Year is going to be a new experience for all of us. Therefore, I have modified my syllabus to reflect the expectations and requirements for this upcoming school year. I look forward to working with you and I am absolutely positive that you will meet  with great success in this course!


EXPECTATIONS FOR DISTANCE LEARNING

                   Check in to  this course daily and on time = Attendance

                   Check your Schoology messages daily

                   Check out our course CALENDAR in Schooology for deadlines.

                   Adhere to all deadlines.

                   Be attentive during virtual class instruction and/or discussion. No cell phone use                     during  this time. 


Classroom Expectations: As a member of this class you are expected to listen to directions, work as directed and use common sense and care when working with materials. You are expected to follow the Code of Conduct of SDHS and Worcester County Public Schools. ALSO, you are expected to follow social distancing guidelines as set forth by the Worcester County Board of Education. The expectations for this course are easy to follow. If you exhibit behavior that is disruptive to this class, your behavior will be noted and taken care of according to school policy. Generally, each distance learning class period will require that you check in to class via Schoology, Zoom and/or Team meeting platforms. I will then take attendance and begin instruction for the day. 


Course Description: It’s important to understand the elements and principles of design and how they are used in various compositions. The rules of composition are not rigid and are intended to serve as general guidelines for exceptional photography and art work. It is vital to understand and apply the rules of composition in order to create pleasing works of art ,photography and to develop a personal style. Through this course of study you will become aware of how compositional rules contribute to the visual impact of different works of art and various photographs. You will explore different types of materials and techniques and develop skill when utilizing these mediums. Additionally, you will work with your IPad  on a daily basis to complete various assignments. You will demonstrate the ability to apply the elements and principles of design to create quality art and photographs. In addition to the elements and principles of design, compositional elements and techniques, you will become familiar with Early Photography, Masters of Photography and possible careers in photography and design.


 What I expect from you…..

         Be on Time

         Listen to Directions

         Be Prepared with materials needed for daily assignments

         Turn in all work on the due date

         Work in class and/or at home as directed       

                                                                     

Materials needed for this Course:

         Sketchbook (approximate size 9x12) This will serve as your portfolio.

         2-Fine point sharpies

         Pencils/ Erasers

         12 Pack of colored pencils         

         County issued IPad and pencil/with required apps.

Additionally, you will need a smartphone w/camera,or a digital camera. 

PLEASE DO NOT purchase a new smartphone or digital camera for this course.


  Design Assignments - You are expected to work daily and submit your assignments by the given deadline. Late work will not be accepted, unless you have an excused absence.  Then you will be allowed to turn in your work according to the school policy. Message me through Schoology if you have any problems. 

 Photography Assignments   – Due to distance learning and the guidelines established by the CDC and the Worcester County Board of Education we will not be utilizing film or  the darkroom during this semester. However, the new lessons for the photography section of this course are exciting and engaging. Examples include the following:

  1.  Introduction to Photographic Composition
  2.  Portraits  
  3.  Landscape
  4.  The Frame                      
  5.  Fall Color            
  6.  Character Study     
  7.  Documentary        
  8.  Photo Essay       
  9.  Still Life  
  10.  Juxtaposition              

ASSESSMENT-Classwork, Projects,Participation Quizzes, Tests and Final Exam - The beginning of the course is going to be different from years past. We will meet virtually for the first few weeks, therefore you will be expected to post responses in class discussion boards,complete distance learning PROJECTS (Design and Photo)  and participate daily (this means attendance as well as,staying in our virtual meeting. ALL THESE AREAS WILL BE Assessed ON A POINT SYSTEM. Additionally, You can expect to complete several quizzes and tests addressing basic information throughout this course. A Final exam will be given at the end of this course which is worth 20 % of your grade.

To say the least  this school year is going to be different for all of us. Please be prepared for class, be in attendance, follow classroom expectations and complete assignments on time. This course covers the elements of two-dimensional design and photography and we will be approaching the method of learning this information in a very different  fashion.  Your sketchbook and  IPad will serve as your notebook for this class.  As this course progresses throughout the semester I will help you organize you classwork, design work and photo assignments . In this class you must be very responsible, organized and aware of deadlines and always remember to contact me with any questions you or your parents may have. As I stated earlier, I am absolutely positive that you will meet with great success in this class!
